Welcome! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist with over 20 years in the field on mental health and substance abuse treatment. I have worked in inpatient, outpatient, and intensive outpatient settings. I received my Master of Social Work degree from East Carolina University and my PhD in Higher Education from Old Dominion University in Norfolk VA. I have been on the faculty in the School of Social Work at East Carolina University since 1997.
I am also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA and served as Director of the Behavioral Medicine Division from 2009 until 2019.
I am the recipient of the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers and am the 2019 recipient of the Jim Edmondson Lifetime Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to the fields of professional alcohol and drug prevention, treatment, counseling, and related fields, awarded by the North Carolina Foundation for Alcohol and Drug Studies.
